When he was in grade 1, the Atlantis born Kyle Cupido had difficulty reading. He eventually moved to a new school where he improved his reading skills and by matric, he was one of his schools top performing learners, achieving several distinctions. The 21 year old Kyle is currently in his fourth year of Dentistry and by next year, the kid that had difficulty reading will be in his final year of his 5 year Dentistry programme at the University of the Western Cape.
With over 5000 followers on social media, Kyle is using his story to motivate the younger generation and to share what it is like to attend university. He says that when he started his first year, he had too much confidence and did not know what was in store for him. He soon realised that University would be multiple times harder and he wants to help young people prepare for life at University.
Kyle says he became interested in Dentistry when a staff member from UWC explained to him what it was like to study dentistry and encouraged him to apply. Kyle also lived and attended school in the Eastern Cape where a life science teacher made him interested in and inspired him to pursue a career in life science.
During their conversation, the UWC staff member gave Kyle a card and he used that card to motivate him to study harder during matric. On the card, it was written, ‘The things we want, we have to work hard for.’ And no doubt, when he becomes a dentist, he will work hard to make sure that he does a good job.
