With many athletes competing to be the next Wayde van Niekerk, one such athlete, Marlon Kayster, might just have what it takes.
Competing at the World Wide Scholarships Western Cape High & LSEN Schools Athletics Championships held in Paarl, Marlon scored a double gold in the under 17 category.
The Boland, Porterville athlete won both the 100m and 200m with times of 10.37 seconds and 21.01 seconds, respectively.
It is, however, in the 100m that he seemed to have made the biggest impression.
With his time of 10.37 second, he officially broke the Western Cape Schools record, the second time he has done so.
He broke the record for the first time in 2025 with a time of 10.45 seconds.
His current time also means that for the 2026 calendar thus far, Marlon is the fastest under 18 sprinter on the planet.
In second place on the world charts is fellow Western Cape sprinter, Jayden Fourie, with a time of 10.38 seconds.
Marlon’s next race will be in Germiston at the ASA Club Championships from 26 to 28 March followed by the South African Schools Athletics in Rustenberg.
