As a kid, Shandre Campbell already had his whole life planned out. He would succeed in the local youth football clubs, move overseas, start playing for the big clubs, represent his country as a member of Bafana and make sure that his family does not have to struggle anymore. If there is one word to describe him, it’s disciplined.
At the age of 12, the disciplined young Shandre signed with Supersport United Youth Academy, the youngest player to sign at the academy. At the age of 19, in 2024, he made his first big move overseas, where he played for Club NXT in the Challenger Pro League, scoring 11 goals and 3 assists in 25 appearances . The club is the youth academy of Belgium based Club Brugge. The following year he moved over to the Senior Side, playing Left Wing for Club Brugge in the Belgian Pro League. It was mostly a move to give him exposure to the Pro Leagues and although he was benched for most of the season, he did make 11 substitute appearances, scoring one goal.
This year, he made another big move, signing a 4 year contract with the newly promoted Belgian Pro League team, KV Kortrijk. Of the move, the team’s Sports Director stated that, as part of their long term plan, they wanted Shandre because he has “creativity, speed, and depth” as well as having experience in the Belgian First Division.
Of his achievements, both his parents are proud of his achievements and get emotional about how far he has gone in the footballing world. It was his dad, Rishaan, that saw that he had both a talent and passion for football, subsequently signing him up for soccer schools.
According to Shandre, his parents had sacrificed a lot to get him to where he is, at times resulting in them struggling financially. And that is why he works so hard, remaining focused and disciplined. He promised himself that he would thank them by making sure that they never have to struggle again. Given that he’ll be making a few million rands a year, it is safe to say that he’ll be keeping that promise.
