Shaqeel Less is the kind of guy that knows a little bit of everything. He has a science degree, has completed certificates in everything from management to computer programming and he is determined to create the next big idea. When he entered the local edition of the 2026 Red Bull Basement competition, he was determined to win. And he did.

The South African Red Bull Basement competition allows ambitious South Africans to enter their technology ideas for a chance to win $100 000 in business funding. However, the contestants first have to win the local round before flying off to the US where they will compete for the big prize.

In March, it was announced that Shaqeel and his partner, Makhi Mangxola, had won the South African round of the competition, with their transport app, Uthutho. The app makes it easier for commuters to manage the public transport system by offering live journey updates and allows public transport owners to register their service for bookings.

In preparation for his inevitable rise to the top, not only has he graduated with a science degree at the University of Cape Town, but he has also taken every course that will add to his skills. He has taken courses in Accounting, Business Management, Multimedia Software Development, Web Design, Data Science, Python Development and Entrepreneurship.

He previously worked as a web developer; web designer and java developer, and currently works as a Software Developer at the University of Cape Town.

Shaqeel and Makhi will be heading to the US in June where they will be competing for and hopefully, bringing home the winning prize.
