When Mark Williams had to decide between millions of rands playing for an English team and representing South Africa at the 1996 Afcon, he chose to represent his country. That year, South Africa reached the finals, playing against Tunisia, with Mark scoring the only two goals that saw South Africa being crowned the Afcon champions for the first time ever.
This year, Mark will be recognised for his contribution to South African football by the South African Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame aims to celebrate great achievements by extraordinary South Africans in order to inspire and empower the youth. Other South African footballers that will be recognised include Janine van Wyk, Theophilus ‘Doctor’ Khumalo, Mark Fish, Philemon Masinga and Aaron Mokoena.
Mark retired from playing football in 2002 and is currently the head coach of the Siwelele FC reserve team. During his footballing career, he has played for Jomo Cosmos, Mamelodi Sundowns, Hellenic FC, Cape Town Spurs, RWD Molenbeek, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Corinthians, Kaizer Chiefs F.C. and Moroka Swallows.
