He is one of the top performing matriculants in the Western Cape and this year, Jordan Alberts will begin his journey towards becoming a medical doctor at the University of Cape Town.
Born and raised in Mitchell’s Plain, the Spine Road High matriculant’s mother, Karen, expressed profound pride in her son for both his work ethic and his ability to overcome insurmountable challenges.
Two years ago, while still in grade 10, Jordan’s father passed away, placing huge emotional strain on him, threatening to derail his strong academic performance.
It was with the support of his mother, grandmother and the rest of his family that he managed to fight through the emotional turmoil.
Not only did he continue being his school’s top performing learner, but he also entered his matric year as the school’s Head Boy.
In a video posted by the university, it is obvious to see how much support he received. The video shows him on first day at the University dorms, unpacking his things and being helped by his mother, grandmother, uncle and two of his cousins.
His uncle and mom expressed how proud they are of him, especially for a kid growing up in Mitchell’s Plain.
His granny, fighting back tears, could barely contain herself at seeing her grandchild on his way to becoming a successful, medical doctor.
