Organized by the Institute of Applied STEM Research and Human Resource Development, the Vietnam International Applied Mathematics Competition aims to test the problem-solving and practical mathematical skills for students from Grade 1 through Grade 12.
The competition is divided into the two parts, the first being the national competitions and the second being the international competition, where all national winners come together to compete against each other.
This year, one of the national South African winners is Landon Cupido, a Grade 6 learner from William Lloyd Primary School in Paarl. He won first place in the grade 5 and 6 category where he was tested on operations on natural numbers; integers; and decimals in practical problems, plane geometry; space; and measurement, probability; statistics; and counting problems, logical thinking and problem solving and algorithmic thinking.
As a result of his national win, he qualifies to go to the international competition in Vietnam, which will be held in March of 2026.
