Dr Curtley Stevens is proud of the fact that his first job was as a sales person at a Game Store. He had just matriculated from Kensington High and was eager to earn his own money and pay for his own way through life. He kept working there for the next 6 years, while also completing both a law degree and masters at the University of the Western Cape. Of course it was a bit tough juggling work and studies, but the brilliant Mr Curtley is made of metal.
During these 6 years, he was placed on the Dean’s Merit List for four years straight, was recognised as one of the top three best-performing law students for the class of 2017, graduated Summa Cum Laude and completed his Masters with another Cum Laude. He was now ready to leave Game and start the next phase of both his professional life and academic life.
He began working as a legal intern at the City of Cape Town, registered for his doctorate, was funded by the European Union, worked for as a researcher for Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in Germany and the Autonomous University of Madrid in Spain, travelled internationally to present his work, published a few papers, taught and supervised postgraduate students, and graduated with his doctorate in 2025.
Today, Curtley is a highly respected Doctoral Researcher at the Dullah Omar Institute ·where he not only conducts legal research, but also writes and publishes academic papers as well as co-supervising on the masters thesis of law students.
Yes, Dr Curtley is a highly respected academic with an amazing record of achievement but he does not forget. He does not forget what it took for him to get to where he is and he proudly lets everyone know where he comes from. He worked hard and earned his place on top of the academic ladder. And he will continue working hard, earning every bit of success as he climbs higher and higher.
