Congratulations to Dr Robyn Adams for being appointed as South Africa’s ambassador to the International Papillomavirus Society. She joins an elite group of just 27 ambassadors worldwide, representing the country on the global stage for the next two years, starting at the society’s 37th Annual Conference in Bangkok, Thailand in October 2025.
The papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted disease with over 200 types leading to cancers such as cervical and throat cancers. The Papillomavirus Society aims to eliminate the virus by bringing together the best medical minds that will research and find medical solutions such as vaccines.
Dr Adams says that it is an honour to represent the country on such a prestigious scientific body and hopes to personally contribute towards the elimination of cervical cancer.
Dr Adams currently works as a researcher at Stellenbosch University’s Gynaecological Oncology Research Group, with a focus on cervical cancer prevention. In addition to her science degree, she also has an honours in Physiological Sciences, a Masters in Cancer Science and a PhD in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
